Le Grand Dérangement
Le Grand Dérangement refers to the forced expulsion of the Acadian people from their homeland in present-day Canada during the mid-18th century. This event occurred between 1755 and 1763, primarily as a result of the French and Indian War and tensions between the British and French colonial powers. Thousands of Acadians were removed from their farms and communities, leading to widespread suffering and displacement.
Many Acadians were deported to various locations, including the American colonies and France. Some eventually returned to Canada, while others settled in places like Louisiana, where they became known as Cajuns. The legacy of Le Grand Dérangement continues to influence Acadian culture and identity today.
