Laws of Ethelbert
The Laws of Ethelbert are a set of legal codes established by Ethelbert, the King of Kent, around the year 602 AD. These laws are among the earliest written legal codes in England and were influenced by both Roman law and local customs. They aimed to regulate various aspects of society, including marriage, property rights, and criminal offenses.
The laws were recorded in the Old English language and consist of 90 individual laws. They reflect the values and social structure of early medieval England, emphasizing the importance of compensation for wrongs and the protection of the vulnerable, such as women and children.
