Lavrentiy Beria
Lavrentiy Beria was a prominent Soviet politician and chief of the NKVD, the Soviet secret police, during the late 1940s and early 1950s. He played a key role in the enforcement of Stalin's policies, including the Great Purge, which targeted perceived enemies of the state. Beria was known for his ruthless tactics and was instrumental in the Soviet Union's nuclear program.
After Joseph Stalin's death in 1953, Beria briefly held significant power but was soon arrested by his political rivals. He was tried for treason and executed later that year, marking the end of his controversial and influential career in Soviet politics.
