Lateral Pterygoid
The lateral pterygoid is a muscle located in the jaw that plays a crucial role in the movement of the mandible, or lower jaw. It is one of the muscles of mastication, which are responsible for chewing. This muscle helps in opening the mouth and moving the jaw side to side, allowing for effective grinding of food.
Anatomically, the lateral pterygoid has two heads: the superior and inferior heads. The superior head connects to the sphenoid bone, while the inferior head attaches to the mandible. Dysfunction or injury to the lateral pterygoid can lead to jaw pain and difficulty in chewing, often associated with conditions like temporomandibular joint disorder (TMJ).
