Larsen C Ice Shelf
The Larsen C Ice Shelf is a large floating ice shelf located on the eastern side of the Antarctic Peninsula. It is part of the larger Larsen Ice Shelf system and covers an area of approximately 50,000 square kilometers. The ice shelf plays a crucial role in stabilizing the glaciers that flow into it, acting as a barrier to prevent them from rapidly melting into the ocean.
In July 2017, a massive iceberg, known as A68, broke away from the Larsen C Ice Shelf, measuring about 5,800 square kilometers. This event raised concerns about the stability of the ice shelf and the potential impact on global sea levels. Scientists continue to monitor the region to understand the effects of climate change on the ice shelf and surrounding ecosystems.
