Lake Calhoun
Lake Calhoun, now officially known as Bde Maka Ska, is the largest lake in the Chain of Lakes in Minneapolis, Minnesota. It covers approximately 401 acres and is a popular destination for outdoor activities such as swimming, kayaking, and fishing. The lake is surrounded by parkland, providing scenic views and recreational opportunities for visitors.
The lake is named after John C. Calhoun, a 19th-century politician, but its name was changed in 2018 to honor the Dakota language and culture. Bde Maka Ska translates to "White Earth Lake," reflecting the area's indigenous heritage. The lake is also home to various wildlife, including birds and fish.
