Ladder-Backed Woodpecker
The Ladder-Backed Woodpecker is a small bird native to the southwestern United States and parts of Mexico. It is easily recognized by its distinctive ladder-like pattern on the back, created by alternating black and white stripes. This woodpecker typically inhabits arid regions, including deserts and scrublands, where it forages for insects and larvae in trees and cacti.
These woodpeckers are about 7 to 8 inches long and have a strong, chisel-like bill for drilling into wood. They are often seen clinging to the sides of trees or hopping along branches. The Ladder-Backed Woodpecker plays a vital role in its ecosystem by helping control insect populations and creating nesting sites for other birds.
