Kursk Salient
The Kursk Salient was a significant bulge in the front line during World War II, located in western Russia. It was formed around the city of Kursk and became the site of one of the largest tank battles in history, known as the Battle of Kursk, which took place in July and August 1943. This battle marked a turning point in the war on the Eastern Front, as Soviet forces successfully repelled a major German offensive.
The salient was strategically important because it allowed the Soviet Union to launch counteroffensives against the German Army. The battle involved massive deployments of tanks, including the German Panzer divisions and the Soviet T-34 tanks. The successful defense of the Kursk Salient helped to shift the momentum in favor of the Soviets, leading to further advances into occupied territories.
