Kunta Kinteh Island, formerly known as James Island, is located in the Gambia River in The Gambia. It is historically significant as a former slave trading post during the transatlantic slave trade. The island was named after Kunta Kinteh, a man from the Mandinka ethnic group who was captured and sold into slavery.
