Kress Stores
Kress Stores, officially known as S. H. Kress & Co., was a popular chain of five-and-dime retail stores in the United States. Founded in 1896 by Samuel H. Kress, the stores offered a wide variety of affordable goods, including household items, toys, and clothing. They were known for their distinctive architecture and bright, inviting interiors.
At their peak, Kress Stores operated over 400 locations across the country. The chain was part of the broader variety store movement, which aimed to provide low-cost shopping options for everyday consumers. Although many Kress locations closed by the 1980s, the brand remains a nostalgic symbol of American retail history.
