Kodama
Kodama are spirits from Japanese folklore believed to inhabit trees, particularly ancient ones. They are often depicted as small, ghost-like figures and are considered protectors of the forest. If a tree is cut down, it is said that the kodama residing within may bring misfortune to those responsible.
In traditional beliefs, people would often perform rituals to appease kodama before cutting down trees. This practice reflects the deep respect for nature in Shinto and Buddhism, where kodama symbolize the connection between humans and the natural world. Their presence serves as a reminder of the importance of preserving the environment.
