King Alfred
King Alfred, also known as Alfred the Great, was the King of Wessex from 871 to 899. He is best known for his defense against the Viking invasions and for successfully uniting various Anglo-Saxon kingdoms. Alfred implemented military reforms and established a network of fortified towns, known as burhs, to protect his realm.
In addition to his military achievements, Alfred was a patron of education and learning.
