King Aerys II Targaryen, often referred to as the "Mad King," was the last Targaryen ruler of the Seven Kingdoms of Westeros. He reigned from 262 AC until his overthrow in 283 AC during Robert's Rebellion. Aerys was known for his erratic behavior and cruelty, which led to widespread fear among his subjects and nobility.
His reign was marked by increasing paranoia and violence, culminating in the infamous event known as the Mad King's "Wildfire" incident, where he ordered the destruction of King's Landing to prevent capture. Aerys II was ultimately killed by Jaime Lannister, a member of the Kingsguard, during the rebellion.
