Keratinized Epithelium
Keratinized epithelium is a type of tissue found in the outer layer of the skin, known as the epidermis. This tissue is characterized by the presence of keratin, a tough, protective protein that helps prevent water loss and protects against environmental damage. The cells in keratinized epithelium undergo a process called keratinization, where they become filled with keratin and eventually die, forming a durable barrier.
This type of epithelium is essential for maintaining the integrity of the skin and providing protection against pathogens, chemicals, and physical abrasions. It is particularly important in areas of the body that experience friction or wear, such as the palms of the hands and soles of the feet.
