Katherine Johnson
Katherine Johnson was an African American mathematician whose work was crucial to the success of the early United States space program. Born on August 26, 1918, she displayed exceptional mathematical skills from a young age. Johnson worked for NASA and contributed to important missions, including the Apollo 11 moon landing and the Space Shuttle program.
Her calculations helped ensure the safety and success of many spaceflights. In recognition of her contributions, Johnson received numerous awards, including the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2015. Her story was also highlighted in the book and film titled Hidden Figures, which showcased the achievements of women in STEM.
