Karl I
Karl I, also known as Charles I of Austria, was the last Emperor of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, reigning from 1916 to 1918. Born on August 17, 1887, he ascended to the throne during World War I, a time of great turmoil and conflict. His reign was marked by efforts to negotiate peace and reform the empire, but he faced significant challenges, including military defeats and political instability.
After the war, the Austro-Hungarian Empire collapsed, and Karl I was forced to abdicate in 1918. He spent the rest of his life in exile, primarily in Switzerland and later in Hungary. He made two unsuccessful attempts to regain the throne before his death on April 1, 1922, in Madeira. Karl I is remembered for his attempts at peace and his commitment to his people.
