Kala Lagaw Ya
Kala Lagaw Ya is an Indigenous Australian language spoken by the people of the Torres Strait Islands, located between the northern tip of Queensland and Papua New Guinea. It is one of the two main languages of the region, the other being Meriam Mir.
The language is primarily used by the Western Islanders and has a rich cultural significance, reflecting the traditions and history of its speakers. Efforts are ongoing to preserve and revitalize Kala Lagaw Ya, as it faces challenges from declining numbers of fluent speakers and the influence of dominant languages like English.
