Julie Mehretu is an Ethiopian-American artist known for her large-scale abstract paintings and drawings. Her work often combines elements of mapping, architecture, and urban planning, reflecting themes of globalization and migration. Mehretu's unique style incorporates layers of ink, acrylic, and other materials, creating dynamic compositions that invite viewers to explore complex narratives. Born in 1970 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, Mehretu moved to the United States as a child. She earned her Bachelor of Arts from Smith College and a Master of Fine Arts from Rhode Island School of Design. Mehretu has received numerous awards and her work is featured in major museums, including the Museum of Modern Art and the Whitney Museum of American Art.
