Juan Fernández petrel
The Juan Fernández petrel is a seabird native to the Juan Fernández Islands off the coast of Chile. It is a medium-sized bird, measuring about 30 to 35 centimeters in length, with a wingspan of approximately 80 to 90 centimeters. This species is known for its dark plumage and distinctive white underparts, which help it blend into its oceanic environment.
These petrels are primarily nocturnal and are most active during the breeding season, which occurs from late September to early March. They nest in burrows on steep cliffs and feed on small fish and squid, which they catch while flying over the ocean. The Juan Fernández petrel is considered vulnerable due to habitat loss and introduced predators.
