Joy Division was an English rock band formed in 1976 in Salford, England. The group consisted of lead singer Ian Curtis, guitarist Bernard Sumner, bassist Peter Hook, and drummer Stephen Morris. They are known for their unique sound that combined post-punk and new wave elements, characterized by dark, atmospheric music and introspective lyrics.
The band's debut album, Unknown Pleasures, was released in 1979 and has since become a classic in the genre. Tragically, Ian Curtis died by suicide shortly before the band was set to embark on their first North American tour, leading to the remaining members forming the band New Order.
