Jouy
Jouy is a term often associated with a style of fabric printing that originated in the 18th century in Jouy-en-Josas, a town near Versailles, France. This technique, known as toile de Jouy, features intricate, monochromatic designs depicting pastoral scenes, historical events, or allegorical figures. The fabric became popular for upholstery, curtains, and clothing, reflecting the elegance of the French Rococo style.
The production of Jouy fabric was pioneered by Christophe-Philippe Oberkampf, a German-born artist and entrepreneur who established a factory in Jouy-en-Josas. His innovative methods allowed for mass production, making these beautiful fabrics accessible to a wider audience. Today, Jouy prints continue to be celebrated in both fashion and interior design.
