John Campbell, 2nd Duke of Argyll
John Campbell, 2nd Duke of Argyll (1680-1743), was a prominent Scottish nobleman and military leader. He was born into the influential Campbell family and succeeded his father as Duke in 1703. Argyll played a significant role in British politics and military affairs, particularly during the War of the Spanish Succession and the Jacobite risings.
As a key figure in the Whig party, Argyll supported the Hanoverian succession and was involved in various military campaigns. He was known for his leadership at the Battle of Dettingen in 1743, which was one of the last battles fought by British troops on the European continent.
