Jean-Marie Pierre Méchain
Jean-Marie Pierre Méchain was a French astronomer and geodesist born on August 16, 1744. He is best known for his work in measuring the meridian arc from Dunkirk to Barcelona, which helped establish the metric system. His precise measurements contributed significantly to the understanding of the Earth's shape and size.
Méchain collaborated with Pierre-Simon Laplace and was a member of the French Academy of Sciences. Despite facing challenges, including political turmoil during the French Revolution, his dedication to science left a lasting impact on geodesy and cartography. He passed away on September 20, 1804.
