Jazz Epistles
The Jazz Epistles was a pioneering South African jazz group formed in the late 1950s. It is notable for being one of the first ensembles to blend traditional African music with jazz, showcasing the talents of prominent musicians like Dollar Brand, later known as Abdullah Ibrahim, and Kippie Moeketsi. Their music reflected the cultural and political landscape of South Africa during apartheid.
The group released an influential album titled Jazz Epistles: Verse 1 in 1960, which featured original compositions and improvisations. This album is significant for its innovative approach and has been credited with inspiring future generations of South African jazz musicians, contributing to the global jazz scene.
