Japanese comedy
Japanese comedy, known as manzai, is a traditional form of stand-up that typically features a comedic duo. One performer, called the boke, makes silly mistakes or absurd statements, while the other, the tsukkomi, corrects them with witty retorts. This fast-paced exchange creates humor through wordplay and misunderstandings.
Another popular style is kyōgen, a form of classical theater that uses exaggerated movements and simple plots to entertain. Often performed alongside Noh theater, kyōgen focuses on everyday life and social commentary, using physical comedy and clever dialogue to engage audiences.
