Jack-o'-Lantern
A Jack-o'-Lantern is a carved pumpkin, traditionally associated with the celebration of Halloween. People hollow out pumpkins, cut out shapes for eyes and mouths, and place a candle or light inside to create a glowing effect. This practice originated from an Irish myth about a man named Stingy Jack who tricked the devil and was condemned to wander the earth with only a carved turnip for light.
The custom of making Jack-o'-Lanterns was brought to America by Irish immigrants in the 19th century. Over time, pumpkins became the preferred vegetable for carving due to their size and availability. Today, Jack-o'-Lanterns are a popular decoration during the Halloween season, often displayed on porches and in windows.
