Jack-O'-Lantern
A Jack-O'-Lantern is a carved pumpkin, traditionally associated with the celebration of Halloween. People hollow out pumpkins, cutting a lid on top and removing the seeds and pulp. They then carve faces or designs into the pumpkin's outer shell and place a candle or light inside to illuminate it.
The practice of making Jack-O'-Lanterns originated from an Irish myth about a man named Stingy Jack. According to the legend, Jack tricked the devil and was condemned to wander the earth with only a carved turnip to light his way. When Irish immigrants came to America, they adapted the tradition using pumpkins, which were more readily available.
