International Holocaust Remembrance Day
International Holocaust Remembrance Day is observed on January 27 each year. This date was chosen to commemorate the liberation of the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp in 1945. The day serves to honor the memory of the six million Jews and millions of others who were persecuted and murdered during the Holocaust.
Established by the United Nations in 2005, the day encourages education about the Holocaust and promotes awareness of the dangers of hatred, discrimination, and intolerance. Various events, including memorial services and educational programs, take place worldwide to ensure that the lessons of the Holocaust are not forgotten.
