Institutionalization
Institutionalization refers to the process of embedding certain practices, norms, or behaviors within established organizations or institutions. This can occur in various settings, such as schools, hospitals, or prisons, where specific rules and structures are created to manage individuals and their interactions. The goal is often to create stability and predictability in how people behave and are treated within these environments.
In the context of mental health, institutionalization can also describe the long-term placement of individuals with mental illnesses in psychiatric hospitals or similar facilities. While this approach was once common, it has faced criticism for potentially leading to neglect and a lack of personal freedom. Modern practices increasingly emphasize community-based care and support, aiming to integrate individuals into society rather than isolate them.
