Inflammatory Myopathies
Inflammatory myopathies are a group of rare diseases characterized by muscle inflammation, leading to muscle weakness and pain. These conditions can affect people of all ages and may be associated with autoimmune disorders, where the body's immune system mistakenly attacks its own muscle tissues. Common types include polymyositis, dermatomyositis, and inclusion body myositis.
Symptoms often include difficulty in climbing stairs, lifting objects, or performing everyday activities. Diagnosis typically involves blood tests for muscle enzymes, imaging studies, and sometimes a muscle biopsy. Treatment usually focuses on reducing inflammation through medications like corticosteroids and immunosuppressants.
