Indigenous Languages of Canada
Indigenous languages of Canada are the native languages spoken by the First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples. There are over 70 distinct languages belonging to 12 different language families, including Algonquian, Iroquoian, and Salishan. These languages reflect the diverse cultures and histories of Indigenous communities across the country.
Many Indigenous languages are endangered due to historical policies and assimilation efforts. Efforts are being made to revitalize these languages through education, community programs, and technology. Organizations and governments are working together to promote language learning and preserve the rich linguistic heritage of Canada's Indigenous peoples.
