Index Librorum Prohibitorum
The Index Librorum Prohibitorum was a list of publications that the Roman Catholic Church deemed heretical or contrary to morality. Established in 1559, it aimed to protect the faith by prohibiting the reading of certain books. The index included works by various authors, including philosophers and theologians, whose ideas were considered dangerous to the Church's teachings.
The Index was officially abolished in 1966, reflecting changes in the Church's approach to censorship and the promotion of free thought. While it no longer exists, the Index remains a significant historical document that illustrates the tension between religious authority and intellectual freedom during its time.
