Imipenem
Imipenem is a broad-spectrum antibiotic belonging to the class of medications known as carbapenems. It is primarily used to treat severe bacterial infections, particularly those caused by multidrug-resistant bacteria. Imipenem works by inhibiting the synthesis of bacterial cell walls, leading to the destruction of the bacteria.
This antibiotic is often administered in combination with another medication called cilastatin, which helps prevent the breakdown of imipenem in the kidneys. Imipenem is typically given intravenously in a hospital setting, making it effective for serious infections such as pneumonia, urinary tract infections, and intra-abdominal infections.
