IgE antibodies
IgE antibodies are a type of protein produced by the immune system in response to allergens, such as pollen, pet dander, or certain foods. They play a crucial role in allergic reactions by binding to these allergens and triggering the release of chemicals like histamine from mast cells and basophils. This process can lead to symptoms such as itching, swelling, and difficulty breathing.
In addition to their role in allergies, IgE antibodies are also involved in protecting the body against parasitic infections. When the immune system detects a parasite, it can produce IgE to help target and eliminate the invader. However, an overproduction of IgE can lead to excessive allergic responses and conditions like asthma or hay fever.
