Identity Diffusion
Identity diffusion is a psychological concept that refers to a state where an individual has not yet developed a clear sense of self or personal identity. This often occurs during adolescence, a critical period for identity formation, where individuals may feel confused about their values, beliefs, and goals. They may lack direction and struggle to make decisions about their future.
In this state, individuals may avoid commitment to any particular identity, leading to feelings of uncertainty and anxiety. Erik Erikson, a prominent psychologist, identified identity diffusion as part of his theory on psychosocial development, emphasizing the importance of exploring different roles and experiences to achieve a cohesive identity.
