Hypertonic Solutions
A hypertonic solution has a higher concentration of solutes compared to another solution, typically a cell's internal fluid. When a cell is placed in a hypertonic solution, water moves out of the cell to balance the solute concentrations, leading to cell shrinkage or crenation.
These solutions are often used in medical settings, such as in IV therapy, to treat conditions like hyponatremia, where the body has low sodium levels. By introducing a hypertonic solution, healthcare providers can help restore the balance of fluids and electrolytes in the body.
