Hungarian Jewish community
The Hungarian Jewish community has a rich history that dates back to the 11th century. Over the centuries, it has contributed significantly to the cultural, economic, and intellectual life of Hungary. At its peak before World War II, the community numbered around 800,000, making it one of the largest in Europe.
The Holocaust had a devastating impact on the community, with approximately 600,000 Hungarian Jews perishing during this period. Today, the community is much smaller, with around 100,000 members, primarily centered in Budapest. Efforts to preserve Jewish heritage and culture continue through various organizations and institutions.
