Houngan
A Houngan is a male priest in the practice of Vodou, a religion that originated in Haiti and blends African traditions with elements of Christianity. Houngans serve as spiritual leaders, conducting rituals, offering guidance, and communicating with the spirits known as Loa. They play a crucial role in the community, helping individuals with personal issues and spiritual needs.
In addition to their spiritual duties, Houngans often possess knowledge of herbal medicine and healing practices. They may also lead ceremonies, such as weddings and funerals, and are respected figures within their communities. Their counterpart, a female priest, is known as a Mambo.
