Highwaymen Artists
Highwaymen Artists were a group of African American painters active in Florida during the 1950s and 1960s. They gained recognition for their vibrant landscapes, often depicting the natural beauty of the Florida Everglades and sunsets. The artists worked outside traditional galleries, selling their paintings along highways, which is how they earned the name "Highwaymen."
The group consisted of about 26 artists, including notable figures like Harold Newton and Sam Newton. Their work is characterized by bold colors and impressionistic styles, capturing the essence of Florida's scenery. Today, Highwaymen art is celebrated for its cultural significance and is sought after by collectors.
