Heterokonts
Heterokonts are a diverse group of eukaryotic organisms characterized by having two different types of flagella. One flagellum is typically long and whip-like, while the other is shorter and hair-like. This unique feature is found in various organisms, including some types of algae, such as diatoms and brown algae, as well as in certain protozoans.
These organisms play significant roles in aquatic ecosystems, often serving as primary producers. Heterokonts contribute to the food web by converting sunlight into energy through photosynthesis, making them essential for the health of marine environments and the overall balance of ecosystems.
