Herald of Free Enterprise
The Herald of Free Enterprise was a roll-on/roll-off ferry that operated between the United Kingdom and continental Europe. Launched in 1980, it was known for its ability to carry both passengers and vehicles, making it a popular choice for travelers. The ferry was owned by the shipping company Zeeuwse Maatschappij van Transport and primarily served the route between Dover and Dunkirk.
On March 6, 1987, the Herald of Free Enterprise capsized shortly after leaving the port of Zeebrugge, Belgium, resulting in the tragic loss of 193 lives. The disaster highlighted significant safety issues, leading to changes in maritime regulations and practices to improve passenger safety on ferries.
