Herald Of Free Enterprise
The Herald of Free Enterprise was a roll-on/roll-off ferry that operated between the United Kingdom and mainland Europe. Launched in 1980, it was known for its ability to carry both passengers and vehicles, making it a popular choice for travelers. The ferry was owned by the shipping company Zodiac Maritime and primarily served the route between Dover and Dunkirk.
On March 6, 1987, the Herald of Free Enterprise capsized shortly after leaving the port of Zeebrugge, Belgium, due to a failure to close its bow doors. The tragic incident resulted in the loss of 193 lives and led to significant changes in maritime safety regulations, emphasizing the importance of proper vessel operation and safety protocols.
