Henotikon
The Henotikon was a document issued in 482 AD by the Byzantine Emperor Zeno. Its purpose was to reconcile the differences between the Chalcedonian and non-Chalcedonian Christians, particularly the followers of Monophysitism. The Henotikon aimed to create unity within the Christian church by emphasizing common beliefs while avoiding contentious theological terms.
The document sought to establish a middle ground by affirming the decisions of the Council of Chalcedon without explicitly endorsing its definitions. However, the Henotikon ultimately failed to achieve lasting unity, leading to further divisions within Christianity, particularly between the Eastern Orthodox and Oriental Orthodox churches.
