Help America Vote Act
The Help America Vote Act (HAVA) was enacted in 2002 to improve the voting process in the United States. It aimed to address issues highlighted by the 2000 presidential election, particularly concerning voting technology and accessibility. HAVA provided federal funding to states to upgrade their voting systems and established minimum standards for voting equipment and procedures.
Additionally, HAVA created the Election Assistance Commission (EAC) to oversee the implementation of these standards and to assist states in improving their election processes. The act also emphasized the importance of voter registration and aimed to make voting more accessible for individuals with disabilities and other marginalized groups.
