Hawaiian petrel
The Hawaiian petrel (Pterodroma sandwichensis) is a seabird native to the Hawaiian Islands. It is known for its distinctive dark upperparts and white underparts, with a wingspan of about 3 feet. These birds primarily feed on fish and squid, which they catch while flying over the ocean.
Hawaiian petrels are nocturnal and nest in burrows on steep, rugged cliffs. They are considered endangered due to habitat loss, predation by introduced species, and climate change. Conservation efforts are underway to protect their nesting sites and increase their population in the wild.
