Halon
Halon is a type of chemical compound that is primarily used in fire suppression systems. It works by interrupting the chemical reactions that occur during a fire, effectively preventing flames from spreading. Halon is particularly effective in enclosed spaces, such as aircraft and data centers, where traditional water-based extinguishers may cause damage.
Due to its ozone-depleting properties, the production of Halon has been largely phased out under the Montreal Protocol, an international treaty aimed at protecting the ozone layer. Existing Halon systems can still be maintained and used, but new installations are generally discouraged in favor of more environmentally friendly alternatives.
