HMS Glorious
HMS Glorious was an aircraft carrier of the Royal Navy, launched in 1916. She was designed to support naval operations during World War I and later served in World War II. The ship was notable for her large flight deck and capacity to carry aircraft, which played a crucial role in naval warfare.
In June 1940, HMS Glorious was sunk by German battleships Scharnhorst and Gneisenau while returning from a mission in Norway. The loss of the ship resulted in significant casualties, with over 1,500 crew members perishing. Her sinking highlighted the vulnerabilities of early aircraft carriers in combat.
