Hürrem Sultan, also known as Roxelana, was a prominent figure in the Ottoman Empire during the 16th century. Born in present-day Ukraine, she was captured and brought to the Ottoman court as a slave. Hürrem eventually became the wife of Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent and played a significant role in political affairs, influencing decisions and policies.
As the first legal wife of a sultan, Hürrem Sultan broke traditional norms, which allowed her to gain considerable power and status. She was known for her charitable works, including the construction of mosques and schools, and her legacy continues to be celebrated in Turkish history and culture.
