Gonzales v. Raich
In the case of Gonzales v. Raich, decided by the U.S. Supreme Court in 2005, the Court addressed the legality of California's medical marijuana law. The case involved Angel Raich, a patient who used marijuana for medical purposes, and John Gonzales, the U.S. Attorney General at the time, who sought to enforce federal drug laws against her.
The Supreme Court ruled that the federal government could regulate marijuana, even if it was grown and used for personal medical purposes under state law. This decision reinforced the power of the federal government to enforce drug laws, despite state-level legalization efforts.
