Global Maritime Distress and Safety System
The Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS) is an international communication system designed to enhance maritime safety. It enables ships to send distress signals and receive assistance quickly in emergencies. The system uses various technologies, including satellite communications and radio, to ensure that vessels can communicate with rescue services and other ships.
GMDSS is governed by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and is mandatory for certain types of vessels. It includes equipment like emergency position-indicating radio beacons (EPIRBs) and digital selective calling (DSC) radios, which help improve response times during maritime emergencies.
